AliExpress Shipping Methods Compared: Which One to Pick

AliExpress Shipping Methods Compared: Which One to Pick

Pick the AliExpress shipping option by what sits next to its name, not by the name itself. The delivery estimate, the Fast Delivery icon and the price tell you more than labels like “Standard” or “Selection Standard”, which AliExpress never defines in public. For most orders, the free option with the Fast Delivery icon is the right one.

The names do follow a pattern, though. Almost all of them map onto three service tiers run by Cainiao, Alibaba’s logistics arm, plus a few special cases. Once you know the tiers, the checkout list stops looking random.

Key Takeaways

  • Most AliExpress shipping names map onto Cainiao’s three tiers: Premium (5 to 10 days), Standard (10 to 18 days) and Economy (20 to 45 days).
  • Super Economy is built for items under about $8. It’s fine for cheap things you can wait for, and a poor choice for anything you’d miss.
  • “For Special Goods” routes carry items ordinary air mail won’t, usually anything with a battery. Expect them to be slower.
  • The Fast Delivery icon matters more than the method name, because it is what makes you eligible for the late-delivery coupon and refund window.
  • US buyers: the duty-free postal route ended in August 2025, so the cheapest method is no longer automatically the cheapest landed cost.

What Do the Shipping Names at Checkout Mean?

AliExpress shows shipping as a list of branded options, and the list changes by seller, item and country. You might see AliExpress Standard Shipping, AliExpress Selection Standard, Cainiao Super Economy Global, a “for Special Goods” variant, the seller’s own method, or an express courier like DHL.

Behind most of those names is Cainiao. Its own cross-border delivery page describes three tiers, and the checkout names are largely different labels on the same three.

Cainiao tierCainiao’s stated delivery timeNames you’ll usually see at checkout
Premium5 to 10 calendar days, to high-demand countries such as the UKOptions with “Premium” in the name
Standard10 to 18 calendar days to key countries, as fast as 7 to the UKAliExpress Standard, Selection Standard
Economy20 to 45 calendar daysSuper Economy options

Those are Cainiao’s figures for its key routes, not promises for your address, and AliExpress itself publishes no transit table. The estimate shown beside each option at checkout is calculated for you, and it is the one to trust. For a country-by-country picture, see how long AliExpress delivery really takes.

Standard Shipping vs Selection Standard: Does the Name Matter?

Less than you’d think. Both sit in the Standard tier, both come with tracking, and AliExpress publishes no specification that separates them. Buyers search for the difference constantly, and the honest answer is that the label beside the name tells you more.

Three things on the checkout line decide how good the option really is:

  • The delivery estimate. A tighter, earlier range means the route is shorter, often from a regional warehouse.
  • The Fast Delivery icon. Only items carrying it qualify for the late-delivery coupon and the refund window after shipment.
  • The price. Paying extra for an option in the same tier, with the same estimate, buys you nothing measurable.

So when Standard and Selection Standard both appear, compare their estimates and icons. If those match, take the cheaper one. If only one carries Fast Delivery, take that one even if it costs a little more, because it comes with a written remedy when things go wrong.

What Is Cainiao Super Economy, and When Is It Worth It?

Super Economy is the cheapest tier, and Cainiao is open about what it’s for. It describes the Economy service as a solution “for small and lightweight items”, with a logistics cost of about $2 that suits “mainstream products with costs ranging from $0 to $8”. Its stated delivery time is 20 to 45 calendar days.

That makes it a reasonable pick for phone cases, cable ties and other cheap items you won’t miss if they take six weeks. It makes it a poor pick for anything expensive, urgent or hard to replace.

The bigger cost is visibility. Economy parcels often show long silences in tracking. A buyer in Malta described a parcel shipped by Super Economy on 13 June 2026 that had not updated since 2 July, more than five weeks later.

Before you choose it, check two things. Is the item worth so little that a lost parcel wouldn’t matter? And is the estimate still inside the window you need? If either answer is no, pay for the Standard tier.

What Does “for Special Goods” Mean?

A “for Special Goods” option is a separate route for items that ordinary air mail won’t carry. Neither AliExpress nor Cainiao publishes a buyer-facing definition, but in practice it shows up on listings for battery-powered items. You don’t choose it to save money. You get it because the item can’t travel any other way.

Expect it to be slower than the normal version of the same tier. These parcels wait for flights or carriers that accept restricted goods, and that wait shows up as long pauses in tracking. A buyer in Portugal reported battery-powered VR trackers stuck on “Awaiting flight” for over two weeks in June 2026.

If you are buying something with a battery and need it by a date, the cheapest option is unlikely to make it. Pick the fastest special-goods option offered, or order earlier. Battery items also carry their own safety questions, covered in are AliExpress chargers safe.

Is Premium or Express Shipping Worth Paying For?

Sometimes. Cainiao’s Premium tier promises 5 to 10 calendar days, but only to countries with high demand, and it names Spain, the Netherlands, the UK and Belgium as examples. Outside those markets, the Premium option may not appear at all.

Courier express, such as DHL, FedEx or UPS, is the other fast route. It is usually the most expensive line at checkout, and on some heavy or high-value listings it is the only one offered.

Paying for speed makes sense in three cases:

  • A real deadline, like a gift or a part you need for a repair.
  • A high-value item, where a shorter journey means fewer handovers and less risk.
  • A heavy or bulky item, where the seller only offers express anyway.

It makes no sense on a cheap item with no deadline. Before upgrading, check whether a Choice version of the same product ships from a warehouse in your region. Local stock often arrives as fast as express for free, as explained in what AliExpress Choice is.

What If the Seller Uses a Different Method?

Some listings only offer the Seller’s Shipping Method, meaning the shop books its own carrier. Speed and tracking vary from shop to shop, and tracking can get thin once the parcel is handed to a local carrier. Check the seller’s reviews for delivery complaints before choosing it. Our 60-second seller check covers what to look for.

A worse problem is a seller who ships by a cheaper method than you paid for. One buyer reported paying for Standard Shipping in June 2026 and finding the parcel had gone by Super Economy, then going missing.

If this happens, your evidence is the order page, which records the method you selected and paid for. Screenshot it, message the seller inside AliExpress, and if the parcel is late or lost, attach the screenshot to your dispute. The full process is in how to win an AliExpress dispute.

What Changed for Shipping to the US?

The cheap postal route into the US no longer works the way older guides describe. The US suspended its $800 duty-free de minimis exemption for all postal shipments on 29 August 2025. The Universal Postal Union reported that 88 postal operators suspended some or all services to the US, and postal traffic fell 81% that day.

The suspension is now permanent regulation. A CBP rule effective 24 July 2026 makes it indefinite for mail and sets up a new postal entry process.

For US buyers, that changes the maths. No route into the US is duty-free any more, so the cheapest shipping line is not automatically the cheapest landed cost. The last mile has changed too, and some US buyers report trouble with SpeedX, one of the carriers now handing over AliExpress parcels. The full duty picture is in our AliExpress import tax guide.

Which Shipping Option Should You Pick?

Match the method to the item, not to habit. The right choice depends on three questions: what the item is worth, whether you have a deadline, and whether it contains a battery. Answer those and the checkout list narrows to one or two sensible lines. This table covers the common cases.

Your orderPick
Cheap item under about $8, no deadlineSuper Economy
Everyday item, normal patienceThe free Standard-tier option with Fast Delivery
Item with a batteryThe fastest “for Special Goods” option offered
Gift or deadline within two weeksChoice local stock first, then Premium or express
High-value or heavy itemExpress courier, or Standard with Fast Delivery
Only Seller’s Shipping Method on offerCheck seller reviews for delivery complaints first

Two habits apply to every row. Read the estimate beside each option before you pay, and screenshot the order page once you have. That screenshot records the method and the estimated date, which are the two things you’ll need if the parcel is late.

When two options look identical on all of that, pick the cheaper one. If several items in one cart arrive in separate parcels, that is normal. It is explained in does AliExpress combine orders into one parcel.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best shipping method on AliExpress?

For most orders, the free Standard-tier option carrying the Fast Delivery icon. It is tracked, Cainiao puts its Standard tier at 10 to 18 days on key routes, and it comes with a written late-delivery coupon and refund window. Pay for Premium or express only when you have a deadline or a high-value item.

Is AliExpress Standard Shipping tracked?

Yes. AliExpress Standard Shipping and Selection Standard both come with tracking, and updates appear in My Orders. Expect gaps of several days while the parcel crosses borders or waits for customs. A pause is normal as long as the estimated delivery date hasn’t passed yet.

How long does Cainiao Super Economy take?

Cainiao states 20 to 45 calendar days for its Economy tier to key countries. Real journeys can run longer, with tracking that goes quiet for weeks. Use it only for cheap items, roughly under $8, that you can afford to wait for or lose.

Why does my item only show “for Special Goods” shipping?

Because the item can’t travel by ordinary air mail, usually because it contains a battery. The special-goods route is the only one carriers will accept for it, which is why no cheaper option appears. Expect it to be slower than the normal tier, and order early.

Is it worth paying for faster shipping on AliExpress?

Only with a deadline, a high-value item, or a heavy parcel. For everyday items, the free tracked option is usually fine. Check first whether a Choice version ships from a warehouse in your country, because local stock often arrives as fast as express without the fee.

AliExpress shipping names look like a menu of carriers, but they come down to three speeds and one important icon. Pick the tier the item deserves, prefer options with Fast Delivery, and screenshot what you chose. That turns a late parcel from a guessing game into a claim you can back up.
